Hysterectomy Alternatives

Endometrial Ablation

With endometrial ablation, the lining of the uterine cavity called endometrium is destroyed using any one of several destructive procedures; all of which report similar satisfaction rates after the procedure. Most women who chose this alternative to hysterectomy for treatment of heavy bleeding are satisfied with results of decreased menstrual bleeding. As with the endometrial resection, some women will go on to have a hysterectomy because heavy bleeding continues but approximately seven out of ten women who have an ablation procedure for heavy menstrual bleeding will avoid a hysterectomy.

Every technique or device available is not appropriate for every patient and therapy must be individualized to each patient.  Dr. Garcia performs several endometrial ablation procedures.

HTA System

The HTA procedure can be performed in the office by Dr. Garcia with the use of local anesthesia and occasionally intravenous sedation.  The procedure involves using a small camera placed in the uterus called a hysteroscope allowing hot water to bathe the internal cavity of the uterus to destroy the endometrium.  This procedure significantly decreases  or eliminates the menstrual flow for approximately ninety percent of women who receive the HTA.  For more information regarding the HTA System click here.

Thermachoice Uterine Balloon Therapy (UBT)

The Thermachoice Uterine Balloon Therapy ablation can also be performed in the office with the use of local anesthetic and occasionally intravenous sedation.  The procedure involves placing a balloon within the internal cavity of the uterus allowing hot water to circulate within the balloon to destroy the endometrium.  This procedure also significantly decreases or eliminates the menstrual flow for approximately ninety percent of women who receive the Thermachoice.  For more information regarding Thermachoice click here.
